Popping Corn 1kg
|The type of corn (Maize) that expands from the kernel and puffed up when heated.
Place a 1/2 cup of popping corn into a lidded deep saucepan with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or drizzled clarified butter. Cover tightly and cook on a medium heat setting. Shake the pot every 30 seconds or so until the kernels begin to pop. It takes about 3 to 4 minutes.
Ideal as a snack. Popular in Cinemas. Can be sugar coated with different sweetened colours! Often salted and or buttered.
In its natural state it can be considered a healthy snack high in dietary fibre, low in kilojoules. It is naturally free of sugar and sodium.
It might have some antioxidant properties.
Corn is a seed, but it can't propagate itself. There are no wild corn plants, and the species is a human bred hybrid. The USA accounts for 43% of the world crop. Australia has about 0.6% of the world crop.
Its kernels have a hard moisture sealed hull and a dense starchy interior. When heat is applied the pressure builds inside the kernel until an explosive "pop" results
Corn was domesticated 9000 years ago. Some archaeologists discovered in Mexico in a site dating back to 3600 BCE that it was already used as a snack at this time.
