The seed has thin dark brown skin. This is bitter and is sometimes removed prior to use in cooking.
The meaning of the term "Meal' in Hazelnut Meal comes from the Latin word "Molere" meaning "to grind". Hazelnut is also called "Filbert" in England, named after Saint Philibert, because his day coincides with ripening date of the nuts.  

During the ancient times, people used it as a medicine and as a tonic. These properties were mentioned in a Chinese manuscript that dates back as far as 2838 BCE.

Hazelnuts trees can produce nuts for as long as 80 years.
