Dates Pitted 1kg
|The fruit of the date palm. Generally, it is the "Sayer" (you don't say) dates that come from Iran or Turkey that are imported into Australia.
Dates are eaten as a snack, or as part of a fruit with cheese platter. They can be stuffed with chopped nuts and used to stuff poultry.
They are often used in cakes and muffins.
The natural sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%. The rest of the fruit consists of protein, fibre and beneficial trace elements.
They may help with digestive problems and anaemia. They are also considered as an energy booster thanks to the many vitamins and sugars they contain.
Some date seeds, if stored correctly, can remain viable for 2000 years!
The name "dates" comes from the Greek word for fingers.
The tree and its fruit have many uses. It is used as a food crop and provides building materials for shelter. Because of its many functions it is often referred to in local culture as the "tree of life". It is also the national symbol for Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Date palm trees can live for up to 200 years. The leaves from the date trees are used to make baskets and carpets and its fibres are used to make ropes and fish traps.
