Coconut flour is used in baking and can be used in both Savoury and Sweet baking applications. It imparts a mild coconut flavour to foods and as it blends well with other ingredients it can be used in most baking applications.
It is very moisture absorbent and prone to clumping so make certain you work out any lumps.
Generally, coconut flour is used in conjunction with other flours, self-raising ingredients and eggs to get the best results.
It is also used to thicken soups, stews or to coat meats and vegetables as a breadcrumb substitute.
Coconut Flour can be used to bake bread, cupcakes, muffins, buns, cookies, pancakes, crepes, brownies, waffles etc.
It is very high in fibre and protein. It is low on sugar but that only remains true if you uses it in a low sugar or no sugar application.
It has a low score on the glycaemic index.
It is gluten free but that only remains true is you mix it with other gluten free ingredients.
It is reported to aid metabolism, maintain a heathy blood sugar level and generally assist digestive health.
It isn't a super food so please use in moderation.
It works in a paleo diet.
For the best results use the coconut flour as replacement for about 20% of the other flour in the recipe.
For each cup of coconut flour you use add an extra cup of water to the mixing bowl. Coconut flour loves a drink.
It can be frozen or stored in the fridge in an air tight container. It will absorb moisture from the air so it is best purchased as required.
Coconut flour can be made in the kitchen. Put the coconut meat in a blender and pulverize. Spread onto a baking tray and dry in the oven for about 4 hours at 150C. Culpepers thoroughly discourages this practice as you can easily buy it from us.
