Usage
It is a major component of Garam marsala and five spice. Used in baking and liquor production.
Great with cooked fruits in casseroles and desserts.
Star anise are traditionally added in soups, Chinese dishes or in Peking duck.
Medicinal Powers?
Star anise has been used in a tea as a traditional remedy for rheumatism, and seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion.
Fun Facts.
In parts of Europe and Asia, it was once acceptable to use Anise Star buds as payment of your tax obligation.
Japanese star anise, a similar tree, is not edible because it is highly toxic! It contains sikimitoxin. It is burned as an incense.
The trees that bear this spice, will not produce any fruit until they are six years old.
